Is this GST number real?

Every GSTIN ends in a check digit calculated from the other 14 characters. A mistyped or made-up number almost always fails it. Type one to test it.

The format and check digit are valid. This could be a real GSTIN. Look it up to see if it is registered and active.

Frequently asked questions

How is the GSTIN check digit calculated?

Each of the first 14 characters is turned into a number (0–9 stay as they are, A–Z become 10–35) and multiplied alternately by 1 and 2. Each product is split into its quotient and remainder by 36 and both are added. The check digit is (36 − total mod 36) mod 36, turned back into a character.

Does a valid check digit mean the business exists?

No. It means the number is well-formed. Only GSTN can say whether it is registered and active, which is what the full lookup checks.

What does each part of a GSTIN mean?

Two digits for the state, ten characters of PAN, one entity number for registrations under the same PAN in that state, the letter Z, and one check character.

How do I spot a fake GST invoice?

Check the GSTIN here first, then look it up to confirm it is active and that the name matches the invoice. Our invoice photo check does both from a picture of the bill.
